WHO ARE WE

The Ingonyama Trust was established under the KwaZulu-Natal Ingonyama Trust Act, 1994 (Act No. 3KZ of 1994) as custodian of approximately 2.8 million hectares of land across KwaZulu-Natal. The Trust exists for the benefit, material welfare, and social well-being of its beneficiary communities.

The Ingonyama Trust Board (ITB), a Schedule 3 Part A National Public Entity, administers the affairs of the Trust and its land. Its mandate is to ensure that the land under its custodianship is effectively managed and developed in ways that uphold traditional land tenure rights while promoting sustainable socio-economic growth.

Our Role in Communities

The ITB works in partnership with Traditional Councils, government, and private stakeholders to:

  • Improve land administration and secure tenure.
  • Support socio-economic initiatives in agriculture, tourism, infrastructure, MSME hubs, and education.
  • Empower young people through scholarship and training opportunities.
  • Ensure revenues generated from Trust land are invested back into community development.
